News / Getting Your Home Ready For Winter With The Right Rug

The nights are drawing in and as winter draws closer, our thoughts turn to the inside of our homes once more as we prepare for spending a lot more time indoors.

Wood, stone, laminate or tiled floors are becoming a feature of our living spaces, particularly open-plan spaces, as they are easy to clean and look stylish. However, come winter, unless you have underfloor heating you might find it altogether a little bit chillier underfoot.

There’s no better way of bringing in a little warmth and atmosphere to a room than a winter rug. More versatile and practical than fitted carpets, rugs are available in every size, colour and style imaginable. They can create and maintain warmth, protect your floor, define an area in your living space and, of course, be a beautiful focal point.

Choosing the Right Rug for You
There is huge variation in price between rugs. Traditionally crafted, hand-knotted Oriental rugs are a real luxury and well-made ones are often passed down generations. Extremely labour intensive to produce, they can run to the many hundreds, even thousands of pounds, but will last for many years if they’re cared for properly.

Hand-tufted rugs are also hand-made, but take less time to create and as a result are generally less expensive. Machine-made rugs are easily the most economical option, although quality does vary, and as with the hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs, you get what you pay for.

Where your rug is going to sit is very important and should help drive your final decision. If it’s going to get a lot of ‘foot traffic’, go for something hard-wearing. A pattern will be a lot more forgiving than a plain light-coloured rug! Take advice from experienced retailers Glenearn, we can guide you through all the options so that you end up with the perfect winter rug!
